Most people picture a wildfire as a forest fire, with a wall of flame moving through tall trees. Open lowland heath does something different and, in some ways, more awkward to deal with.
It burns fast and low across gorse, heather and dry grass. Wind drives it rather than crown fire, and it covers ground quicker than people on foot can move. Why Does Heathland Burn Differently?
