About this tour
This 2.5-hour guided walk through Durham moves beyond the standard cathedral visit to reveal the city's layered past. You'll encounter St. Oswald's remarkable return from exile and his role in founding the spiritual lineage that shaped Durham, then shift to darker chapters: medieval prisons, public executions, and persistent ghost stories. The tour concludes by tracing the coal mining boom that built modern Durham and shaped its working-class identity—stories told by locals who still carry this heritage.

What to expect
Expect a walking tour that treats Durham as a living archive rather than a museum. Your guide will weave together royal drama, criminal history, and industrial memory—moving between grand ecclesiastical sites and modest terraced streets where miners once lived. You'll hear about supernatural encounters and see where justice was once administered in brutal fashion. The pace suits all fitness levels, and the route covers both well-trodden and overlooked neighbourhoods. Bring comfortable shoes and dress for the weather; Durham's exposed hilltop position means wind is common.
Good to know
Dogs and service animals welcome. Prams and strollers accommodate infants and young children. Public transport stops nearby if you need to exit early. The walk involves some uneven cobbles and gentle gradients—manageable but worth noting if mobility is a concern.
