What to expect
You'll arrive at the crag and be fitted with climbing shoes, harness and helmet. Your instructor runs through safety protocols, then you'll move onto the rock—starting with ground-level problems to warm up, progressing to longer sequences as you find rhythm and confidence. Expect plenty of trial, failure and problem-solving; climbing is as mental as it is physical. After several hours of climbing, you'll learn to abseil, clipping into anchor points and lowering yourself down the face under controlled tension. Finish with refreshments and a debrief.
Good to know
Moderate fitness required; tell your instructor about any injuries or concerns beforehand. Wear layers you don't mind getting dirty. Under-18s must bring a parent or guardian. Bring a change of top for afterwards—hands and forearms will be chalky. Climbing shoes are provided, but bring your own if you have a preference.
