About this walking route

The Freshwater Way is a 7.7 km challenging walk from Milford on Sea that follows the River Freshwater through varied New Forest terrain. Expect woodland paths, open heath and grassy sections with some steep banks and boggy ground after rain. The waymarked route offers a good workout and rewards with river views and open countryside. Allow 1 hour 45 minutes.

Highlights

  • River Freshwater valley throughout the walk
  • Mix of woodland and open heathland scenery
  • Challenging gradients and natural obstacles
  • Waymarked throughout for confident navigation
  • Open access terrain with diverse wildlife habitats

What to expect

Uneven woodland paths and grassy forest tracks, with significant gradient changes as you follow the river valley. The terrain alternates between enclosed woodland (inclosures) and open heath. After rainfall, expect muddy patches and boggy ground, particularly in lower sections. The route is waymarked but involves climbing and descending steep banks. Livestock (ponies, cattle, donkeys) graze freely across the open access areas.

Good to know

  • Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
  • Waymarked route

Sturdy, waterproof walking boots recommended. Keep dogs under control near free-roaming livestock and on open access ground. Avoid the route or keep dogs on lead during March to July (ground-nesting bird season). No charge for open access. The challenging gradient makes this less suitable for very young children or those with limited fitness.
