Strawberry Trail
About this walking route
The Strawberry Trail is a 19 km challenging walk looping through varied New Forest terrain near Hythe. Expect a full morning or afternoon's outing across open heathland, through ancient woodland inclosures and past grazing lawns where ponies, cattle and donkeys roam freely. Waymarked throughout, the route offers a genuine test of endurance and navigation over sometimes boggy ground.
Highlights
- Open heathland vistas across the forest
- Ancient woodland sections with mixed canopy
- Free-roaming forest livestock throughout
- Waymarked trail for navigation confidence
- Substantial 4+ hour woodland walk
What to expect
Gravel forest tracks alternate with softer ground and boggy patches, especially after rain. Terrain undulates gently but the distance and length make this challenging. Waymarkers keep you on route through woodland and across open areas. You'll encounter grazing ponies, cattle and donkeys at various points—keep to waymarked paths and give livestock space.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Waymarked route
Keep dogs close near livestock and away from open access heathland during March–July (ground-nesting birds). After rain, expect muddy sections; sturdy walking boots are essential. The forest is free to access. Start early to complete before dusk. Bring water and snacks for the duration.
