About this walking route

A short, easy walk from Minstead through open Forest with good chances of spotting native deer. At just 360 metres, this is a quick stroll ideal for families or anyone wanting a taste of the New Forest's wildlife without committing to a longer route. The waymarked path takes you across grazed lawns and through light woodland where fallow and sika deer often roam.

Highlights

  • Excellent deer-spotting opportunity on open lawns
  • Waymarked throughout, easy to follow
  • Flat terrain, suitable for all fitness levels
  • Native New Forest landscape in miniature

What to expect

Flat, easy walking underfoot on grass and gravel forest tracks. The route crosses open grazed areas and light woodland typical of the New Forest, with gentle, barely noticeable slopes. Waymarking is clear. You will likely encounter free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys grazing; move calmly around them. The trail is short enough to stay dry even after rain, though ground may be soft in places.

Good to know

  • Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
  • Waymarked route

Dogs are welcome on this open-access route but must be kept under control near grazing livestock and particularly during March to July when ground-nesting birds are breeding. No charge to walk. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes or boots—the Forest can be boggy in wet weather. The 5-minute duration makes this ideal for a quick Forest visit.
