Highlights
- Mix of open heathland and woodland sections
- Grazing New Forest ponies and cattle throughout
- Dirt surface easy underfoot in dry conditions
- Moderate pace, manageable for most walkers
- Free access, no permits or fees required
What to expect
Mostly level or gently rolling terrain on dirt paths and forest tracks. The ground can be boggy in places after rain, particularly on open heathland stretches. Waymarking should be clear. Expect to see free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys across the route — keep a sensible distance from animals and don't feed them. Some sections may cross open grass or grazed areas.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear as mud collects quickly after wet weather. Dogs are welcome on this open access route but must be kept under close control around livestock. Avoid the route during spring and early summer (March–July) when ground-nesting birds may be present. The footpath is free to use and requires no advance booking.
