About this walking route

A moderate 6.6 km walk from Ringwood into the open heathland and woodland of south-west Hampshire. The route is waymarked throughout and takes around 90 minutes at an easy pace. You'll traverse typical New Forest terrain—grazed heathland, scattered woodland and forest tracks—with the Huff Duff (a local high point) offering views across the surrounding landscape. Suitable for a morning or afternoon outing with good fitness.

Highlights

  • Elevated vantage point across south-west Forest
  • Mix of open heath and mixed woodland
  • Waymarked route, easy to follow
  • Grazing ponies and cattle on open access land
  • Forest tracks and natural paths throughout

What to expect

Mostly gravel forest tracks and natural footpaths, with some boggy patches after rain. Terrain is gently rolling with modest climbs to the Huff Duff itself—nothing steep, but the elevation gain will feel present over the full distance. Waymarking is clear. Expect to see ponies, cattle and donkeys on the open heath; the landscape is characteristically open and wild in parts.

Good to know

  • Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
  • Waymarked route

Keep dogs under control near grazing livestock and away from ground-nesting birds (March to July). Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear—forest tracks hold moisture well after rain. No facilities or charges apply; the Forest is open access. Allow extra time in wet conditions when ground becomes muddy.
