About this cycle route
A demanding 182 km cycle network across the New Forest, linking woodland tracks, forest roads and quiet lanes. This is a serious day out or multi-day expedition requiring good fitness and bike-handling skills. The route weaves through ancient inclosures, open heathland and ornamental woodland, offering a comprehensive tour of the forest's varied terrain. Based near Lyndhurst, it suits experienced cyclists comfortable with gravel surfaces and navigation.
Highlights
- Gravel forest tracks and quiet bridleways
- Open heathland with roaming ponies and cattle
- Ornamental and ancient woodland sections
- Extensive network for flexible loops and stages
- Waymarked throughout for navigation
What to expect
A mix of firm forest gravel, harder-packed bridleways and occasional tarmac lanes. Terrain is undulating rather than steep; the New Forest's gentle topography suits bikes well. Ground can be soft and boggy after rain, particularly in wetter months. You'll share bridleways with horses and pass through open grazing land where ponies, cattle and donkeys roam freely. Waymarking is clear, though concentration is needed on longer days.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Open to cyclists
- Waymarked route
Keep dogs under control near livestock and ground-nesting birds (March–July). Mud and waterlogged patches are common after heavy rain; knobbly tyres help. All access is free; no facilities are guaranteed en route, so carry water and snacks. A hybrid or mountain bike suits the mixed surfaces better than a road bike. Start early for a full route or plan shorter loops across multiple days.
