A 6.3 km moderate walk following the line of the former Southampton & Dorchester Railway. The route runs along gravel tracks through mixed New Forest woodland and open heathland, offering a straightforward route suitable for families and regular walkers. The old railway line provides level, well-drained going and a clear sense of direction. Sway is the nearest town for parking and amenities.

What to expect
Firm gravel underfoot, mostly level with minimal gradient. The route follows the abandoned railway line, giving clear, logical navigation through both enclosed woodland sections (ancient and ornamental plantations) and open heathland with grazing ponies, cattle and donkeys. Well-maintained and easy to follow. May be muddy or waterlogged in low-lying patches after wet weather.

Dogs are welcome on this open-access route; keep them under control near grazing animals and avoid ground-nesting bird areas March–July. Sturdy trainers or walking boots are sensible, especially in damp conditions. No facilities on the route itself; plan supplies and parking near Sway. The route is also open to cyclists—expect occasional bike traffic.
