Avon Valley Path
About this walking route
The Avon Valley Path is a challenging 57 km walk following the River Avon from Fordingbridge southward through the New Forest and beyond. This is a full-day or multi-day undertaking, best split across two outings. The route combines open heathland, woodland sections and riverside meadows, with the river itself providing a constant, navigable landmark. Waymarking helps, but navigation requires attention on longer legs.
Highlights
- River Avon as constant companion through forest
- Open heathland with distant views
- Mixed woodland inclosures and ancient forest
- Riverside meadows grazed by New Forest livestock
- Bridging of valley floor and higher ground
- Long-distance walking challenge
What to expect
Terrain is mixed: gravel and earth forest tracks, open heathland paths and some sections on softer ground prone to waterlogging after rain. Gradient is generally gentle, following the river valley, though some undulation where the path climbs away from the Avon. The route is waymarked, though distance and varied terrain demand good map-reading. Expect to encounter grazing ponies, cattle and donkeys throughout.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Waymarked route
This is a substantial walk; plan stops and supplies accordingly. Dogs are welcome on open access land but must be kept under control near livestock and away from ground-nesting birds (March to July). Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear—boggy patches are common after rain. No facilities are guaranteed along the route; carry water and food. The path is free to use.
