Bournemouth Coast Path
About this walking route
The Bournemouth Coast Path is a challenging 14 km walk following the Dorset coastline east from Sopley. Expect cliff-edge sections with varied terrain including sand, shingle and coastal grassland, with views across Christchurch Bay and towards the Isle of Wight on clear days. This is a full morning or early afternoon outing, best tackled with decent footwear and awareness of tide times where the route meets the beach.
Highlights
- Clifftop views across Christchurch Bay
- Mixed coastal terrain: sand, shingle, grassland
- Potential Isle of Wight sightings in good visibility
- Open access throughout; dogs welcome
- Well-waymarked route avoiding navigation difficulty
What to expect
Predominantly coastal paths on clifftops and grassy headlands, with descents to beach level at several points. Terrain underfoot shifts between firm grass, loose shingle and sand; some sections are steep. The route is exposed to wind and weather. Waymarking is clear and regular. You'll encounter open access land grazed by livestock and, seasonally, ground-nesting birds.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Waymarked route
Wear sturdy, gripping footwear suitable for uneven ground and shingle. Check tide times before departure, especially where the route uses beach sections. Keep dogs away from cliff edges and ground-nesting birds (March to July). The path can be muddy after rain. There is no charge; this is free open access land. Allow three hours, or more if you're not a strong walker.
