What to expect
Terrain varies between gravel forest tracks, footpaths, woodland floor and open heathland. Gradient is generally moderate, though some inclines occur in wooded sections. After rain, expect muddy patches and boggy ground on open areas. Waymarking is clear and regular. Free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys graze openly; the route is well-established and regularly walked. Navigation aids are reliable, but bring a map and compass.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Waymarked route
This is a serious multi-day walk requiring good fitness and navigation skills. Dogs are welcome on open access but must be kept under control near grazing livestock and away from ground-nesting birds (March–July). Wear waterproof, sturdy walking boots; mud after rain is common on heathland. There is no charge for access. Plan overnight stops and resupply in advance.
