Keble Way
About this walking route
The Keble Way is a challenging 33 km walking route that makes a long circuit through the New Forest, starting and finishing near Totton. This is a serious day walk for experienced hikers, combining open heathland, woodland inclosures and forest tracks across varied terrain. The waymarked trail takes you deep into the Forest, so good fitness and navigation skills are essential. Most of the route follows established paths, though some sections can be boggy after rain.
Highlights
- Long-distance circuit through diverse Forest habitats
- Mix of open heathland, ancient woodland and gravel tracks
- Extensive views across the New Forest landscape
- Waymarked throughout for route confidence
- Free open-access walking on Forest land
What to expect
A full day's walk on a mix of forest tracks, bridleways and footpaths, with some boggy patches after rain. Terrain varies from firm gravel tracks through inclosures to softer ground on open heathland. Gradients are gentle to moderate overall, though the distance is the main challenge. Livestock (ponies, cattle, donkeys) roam freely. The route is clearly waymarked, essential given its length and Forest setting.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Waymarked route
This is a substantial undertaking—set out early and check daylight hours. Waterproof boots recommended; mud is likely after rain. Keep dogs under control near grazing livestock and away from ground-nesting birds (March to July). There is no charge for access, but take water and food. Navigation aids (map, compass or GPS) are sensible backup to waymarks.
