About this cycle route

National Cycle Route 236 links Southampton to Lyndhurst through 19 km of the New Forest's interior. This challenging ride takes in a mix of forest tracks, some road sections and open heathland, offering a proper introduction to the Forest's varied terrain. Best suited to riders comfortable with sustained effort and variable surfaces.

Highlights

  • Forest tracks and gravel paths through mixed woodland
  • Open heathland stretches with wide views
  • Waymarked throughout for confident navigation
  • Access to Lyndhurst, the Forest's main village
  • Free cycling on open access land and bridleways

What to expect

Gravel forest tracks alternate with harder-packed paths and some tarmac road sections. The route climbs gradually through the Forest's interior, with boggy patches common after rain. Waymarking is clear. You'll pass through inclosures (fenced woodland) and open lawns where free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys graze — give them space and ride slowly.

Good to know

  • Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
  • Open to cyclists
  • Waymarked route

Bring a hybrid or mountain bike; narrow tyres struggle on loose gravel. The route can be muddy after wet weather. Keep dogs under close control near livestock and away from ground-nesting birds (March–July). No facilities or charges — plan refreshment stops in advance. Wear visible clothing and lights if cycling early or late.
