Southampton Cycle Network Route 1
About this cycle route
A 7.4 km cycle route from Totton that combines forest tracks and open access paths through the New Forest. Marked throughout, this challenging ride suits confident cyclists comfortable with variable terrain and natural obstacles. Expect gravel forest tracks, potential boggy sections after rain, and some steep or technical passages that demand care and bike-handling skill.
Highlights
- Gravel forest tracks through mixed woodland
- Open heathland sections with wide views
- Natural terrain challenging for experienced cyclists
- Free access across open forest
- Well-waymarked throughout the route
What to expect
Mostly gravel and natural forest tracks with some steep or rough sections. Ground may be boggy after rain, particularly on open heathland. Watch for loose stones and roots. Gradients rise and fall noticeably; not a flat ride. Waymarking is clear. You may encounter free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys—slow down and give them space.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Open to cyclists
- Waymarked route
Wear sturdy cycling shoes with grip; tyres suited to loose gravel and mud improve safety. Dogs are welcome but keep them under control near livestock and ground-nesting birds (March to July). The route is free, open access. Mud after rain can be deep; consider timing after dry spells if you prefer easier conditions.
