European walking route E9, Isle of Wight alternative
About this walking route
This 77 km challenging walking route follows the European E9 long-distance path via an Isle of Wight alternative, linking the New Forest to coastal Hampshire. Over roughly 17 hours of walking, the route combines forest tracks, woodland paths and open heathland with sections along or near the Solent coast. Best tackled over two days with proper planning, it demands good fitness and navigation skills.
Highlights
- Long-distance E9 waymarked trail across varied terrain
- Mix of forest inclosures, open heathland and coastal views
- Sustained walking challenge through Hampshire landscape
- Access to Solent shoreline and maritime heritage
- Gravel tracks and woodland paths throughout
What to expect
Predominantly gravel forest tracks and woodland paths with sections of open heathland. Terrain is generally undulating with some boggy patches after wet weather. Waymarking is consistent along the E9 route. Expect to encounter free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys, particularly on open ground. Gradient is moderate overall but cumulative over distance.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Waymarked route
Serious undertaking requiring good boots, map and navigation skills. Dogs welcome on open access but must be kept under control near livestock and ground-nesting birds (March–July sensitivity). Routes are muddy after rain. No facilities along the trail itself—plan food, water and accommodation carefully. Not a linear walk from Fawley; check detailed route mapping before starting.
