What to expect
Expect a mix of gravel forest tracks, woodland paths, open heathland and occasional boggy patches, particularly after rain. The terrain is generally rolling with no severe gradients, but the length demands stamina. Waymarks guide the route throughout. You'll encounter free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys grazing openly—keep dogs under close control and leave gates as you find them. Navigation can be challenging in places; good map-reading skills are essential.
Good to know
- Dogs welcome (keep under control near livestock & wildlife)
- Waymarked route
Sturdy walking boots with good grip are vital; waterproof trousers recommended for wet weather and boggy ground. Plan water and supply stops carefully across this long route. Dogs are permitted on open access land but must stay away from ground-nesting birds (March–July) and be managed responsibly around livestock. This is a true expedition—allow adequate time and fitness preparation.
